Mid-50s Spotlite Black Box

This box was in use from roughly 1955-57 and was designed primarily for a line of buckram (fabric) masks that Ben Cooper patented in 1955 (link).

I chose not to include it in the VacFace Library mainly because its odd dimensions didn’t work with the layout of the library page.
Despite the problematic aspects of the design, it’s part of Ben Cooper’s history and deserves mention.

There were three versions of the box with different labels on the front and sides. One had a solid front in lieu of the window cutout.

The illustrations depict four long-neck masks (clockwise from bottom R): Jerry Giraffe, Rodeo Horse, Dragon, and the culturally insensitive Zulu Chief.

The elongated masks had false sets of eyes positioned above the wearer’s head with “hidden” cutouts to see through.

The mid-50s saw the introduction of vinyl Halloween masks which were slowly replacing buckram as the material of choice, it’s likely that the long-neck masks were some of Ben Cooper’s last fabric masks.
