Monster Box Art Origins

Thanks to a tip from a friend I was able to trace Frank Romano’s Monster box illustrations to their likely origin.

They appear to be based on Harry Schaare’s fantastic packaging art for the 1969/1970 glow-in-the-dark model kits by Aurora. The original artwork was based on classic promotional photos from the Universal films with some modifications – specifically to the face of the Mummy which was replaced from earlier packaging that featured Boris Karloff’s likeness. I’m not sure why it was changed as the model kits still bore the Universal license. I’d love more insight if anyone has any.
